Mirador del Far de Santa Pola

Mirador del Far de Santa Pola is a viewpoint next to the lighthouse at the eastern tip of Cape Santa Pola. The cliffs here rise about 150 m above the sea, and the cape itself is a fossil coral atoll. The lighthouse came into service in 1858 on the site of the Atalayola (Talaiola) watchtower, built in 1552. Its light sits 152 m above sea level and has a range of 16 nautical miles. In 2015 Santa Pola town council built the viewpoint next to it with two metal walkways: the first winds along the cliff edge and the second runs out towards the sea. The layout of the walkways lets you play with perspective when taking photos. The deck looks over the bays of Santa Pola and Alicante and across to Tabarca island, almost directly opposite. In good visibility you can see north as far as the Peñón de Ifach and south to Cape Cervera and Grosa island. Old military installations survive nearby: Civil War anti-aircraft batteries, coastal batteries, galleries and a bunker that now holds a survey marker. Access is from the N-332 along a tarmac road in poor condition, and reviewers often mention the narrow road and the potholes. Cars are left at a car park next to a picnic area, about 300 m from the lighthouse and the viewpoint. The path is stony at first and then paved with stones, and one visitor notes that the walk from the car park is not the easiest. An alternative approach starts from the Gran Alacant estate, about 700 m on foot from the lighthouse. Sunrises, the bunkers and the walking routes around the cape also come up frequently in visitor reviews.
