La Taberna del Gourmet is a tapas tavern on San Fernando street in central Alicante, listed in the MICHELIN Guide, which calls it almost a “tapas museum”. A large choice of tapas made from high-quality produce is on display at the bar, backed by an extensive list of Spanish wines. The cooking is built on produce from nearby fish markets and Alicante recipes — besides tapas there is seafood, rice dishes (including paella and arròs a banda) and grilled meat. The restaurant has several areas — the bar, a dining room, a snug corner and a terrace — and belongs to the María José San Román restaurant group. The paella and the torrija for dessert come up most often in reviews, and one guest particularly praises the fresh seafood; some note, however, that the waiters are very busy when the place is full.
Book a table (you can do it online), as it gets very busy. Paella and torrija for dessert come up most often in reviews, and one guest particularly recommends the raw red prawns (gamba roja).
